The Rugby Academy was the first of its kind in Wales and has been a template for success within the rugby industry. The Academy was the first Llanelli Scarlet’s Academy Centre of Excellence within the region and the sole pole bearer for the Scarlet’s Region in British School/College rugby in recent years. This was confirmed in 2005/06 when the college won the ‘Heineken Cup’ of schools/college rugby The British Schools U18 Super 16 Cup and in 2007/08 when the team won the Welsh Schools U18 League, the Welsh Schools U18 7s, the British Colleges U19 League and British Colleges U19 Cup. The Academy has further proved its excellence in rugby in 2008/09 by winning The British Schools U18 Super 16 Cup for the second time, winning both the Welsh Schools U18 league and cup, and becoming Welsh Schools U18 7's Champions for the sixth time in eight years. We have an excellent record of producing quality players who have received representative honours for various age groups within the WRU National Squads and the Welsh and British colleges systems. As mentioned before we also have long established and strong links at Stradey Park, which is home ground to the Llanelli Scarlets with many of our rugby students feeding into the Scarlets Academy and Scarlet Regional squads at U18 and U20 level. The quality of our provision has been confirmed with the favourable findings of the Curriculum Area Assessment (Inspection) undertaken by Her Majesty's Inspectorate in October 2001. They stated that, "Staff in the Rugby Academy provides particularly effective support to students from across the college. They encourage them to achieve an appropriate balance between the demands of their courses, sports participation and social life." These comments complement our statistics from last year as students within the academy achieved a 98% retention and completion rate. The Rugby Academy recognises the importance of ensuring young rugby players have a secondary career, which they can take up, at the end of their professional playing careers. This is crucial to the aims of the Academy as we provide everything a young player requires to reach his playing potential and will also provide courses, including coaching development, and services to ensure social, academic and/or vocational development.
